The River Beneath the River ~The Sacred Journey of Individuation

It has taken me a long time to reclaim my inner throne, my true sovereignty. I was not taught to live this way. I found my way through sacrifice, through compromise, through stifling some of my deepest inner impulses. I put on a mask without knowing that it was a mask. Stripping away all of the protection, the defences, the armour, has taken me a lifetime. And I’m still on that journey. It doesn’t stop—it’s a journey that goes on and on, without an end, without a final...

The Level Gaze ~Secrets of the Heart

Everyone I know is hoping that this year will be an easier year than 2018. I hope so as well. It was fascinating for me to discover that the experience of struggle, overwhelm and conflict was almost universal in 2018. From my perspective, a huge amount of the suffering and chaos was happening inside the field of human relations. You might feel this is very obvious, and wonder why I bother to mention it. I’m saying this because I don’t think our individual and collective experiences...

The Life That Chooses You ~The Soul & Your Sacred Edge

Who knows what brings you to these moments, in which you are shaken up, startled, and issued a radical invitation: to step into the life that chooses you. This is your authentic life, the life of the soul. It’s a life that is much, much bigger than your personal agendas. And at the same time, this is your way, which is utterly unique. Not separate, and not the same as any other human being. Moments like this can be very disturbing. We feel clearly, viscerally, the impact of all of the...

Love’s Fierce Initiation~Part Two

Widening the Circle of Our Courageous Love An amazing connection unfolded for me today. I spent the morning grieving for the people who died in Pittsburgh on Saturday, in the mass shooting. Then I posted this on Facebook: “I am not going to shut down, numb out, dissociate, tell myself that I don’t have the time to mourn this tragedy, and pay attention to what it represents. I went online this morning and looked at the photos and read the bios of each one of the eleven people that died...

Light in the Darkness

This week I have been weeping and also feeling deep joy on behalf of a man in Africa and a young woman from Iraq. Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad have each won the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for their work to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war in armed conflict. The Nobel Committee commended them both for having “put their personal security at risk by courageously combating war crimes and seeking justice for the victims.” Whatever our feelings about the Nobel Prize, it does...

Shaken & Stirred ~ Moving through the Birth Canal

Only what shakes me to the core leads me onward. The rigidity breaks, growth follows.  —Bert Hellinger We human beings are strange creatures. We protect ourselves a lot, and try to remain in a  comfortable, familiar place. And we long for adventure, for the healing movement of unfolding and awakening. The impulse to defend and protect ourselves is very natural, and needs to be respected. And it can carry us into a place of real rigidity and isolation, where frozen pockets of energy can...
